How To Prevent Accidental Clicks On Your Own Google Ads

Posted in Blogging, Tech Tips / Tech Tricks / Tech Hacks by Gautam on Nov 10th, 2007

Most adsense publishers fear that they might click on their own ads, which will result in termination of their contract with Google. Accidental clicks ere a real problem for me too initially, until I found out some simple, cool tricks, which made my life more easier.

To start with, Michael Hampton from Homeland Stupidity has developed a script, which will prevent publishers from accidentally clicking on their own ads. If you decide to go this route, you need to have Firefox with Greasemonkey extension installed. Once you have Firefox and Greasemonky insalled, you’ll have to download the script and install it.

Once done with the installation of the script, visit your website which has AdSense ads in it. A popup box will bounce up asking for your AdSense Publishers Code (You can find your publisher code at the bottom of ‘My Account’ in your AdSense Account’s Dashboard, which looks something like pub-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).

If this sounds too complicated then you can also block Adsense ads using the Hosts file. Open “lmhosts” file with any text editor and add the loopback address, as shown below:

127.0.0.1 localhost

You can find the “HOSTs” file in is located in c:\\windows\\system32\\drivers in Windows NT and XP. In Windows 9x, the HOSTS file is located in c:\\windows.

If you still feel you clicked on your own ad by mistake you can report it to Google at this page.

Google PageRank Slap :-/

Posted in Blogging by Gautam on Oct 25th, 2007

My Google reader today is filled with Page Rank slap related issues. Almost everyone is churning out the same content, or to put it in a right way, content which brings out the same information.

It’s a waste of time if I too put my views on this as it is no different from Pagerank-orgy/
or the shocking page rank update :)
For all those who read this, you should notice Statcounter’s Page rank, they went down from 10 - 9 in the previous update and now down to 6!!!

Back … Live and kicking

All the regular readers would have noticed that our site was hacked.

The good part is that I’m back, live and kicking and the bad part is that I’ve lost some data, some earnings and yeah a lot of frustrated visitors who would had landed on my page searching for something.

It really gets frustrating at times when you search for something, find a site which offers the solution but the site doesn’t load up. I could do nothing about it this time.

Other major lesson I learnt is that I need to take timely backups of important data. My host takes weekly backup of my data. The datacenter too takes weekly back up, but if you are a blogger who blogs regularly, then in the worst case you might loose a weeks data.

To be on the safer side, find out from your host when your weekly back up happens. Schedule another data backup in the next three days so that even if something goes wrong you’ll loose three days data and not much. There are quite good other alternatives too, but this is the simplest and suits perfect for all the laziest people out there :)

Google Makes A Fool Out Of Themself - Google Video Blog

Posted in Blogging, Marketing by Gautam on Jul 17th, 2007

Promotion is an essential factor when it comes to branding yourself/company/product. Well, it’s a well known fact that putting up a blog comes a long way in promoting your self/company/product. Every other person involved in the marketing industry, either directly or indirectly is associated with blogging and it’s so for obvious reasons.

When it comes to promoting anything, there are two ways, one is the good way known as good promotion and the other, yeah, bad promotions. Well, do I hear you saying, promotions are promotions so what’s the deal with good or bad promotions now?

Let’s face it, good promotions can portray you/your product a “must have” substance in front of your potential customers where are bad promotions can be a major turn off. Bad promotions can turn you into a laughing stock and ensure you look like a joker.

Well by now you are wondering WTF? The title talks about Google Video Blog and am uttering absolutely irrelevant stuff, right? Hold on, mm coming right there.

I was forced to write this post as I came across an interesting post, which speaks what a blunder google had committed, though it’s an age old post, there are some “marketing lessons” to be learnt from it.

If you are blogging for fun, then these kind of mistakes don’t matter much, but when it’s a corporate blog and there are millions of eye balls watching every single word you type, every word you speak, every single thought you express, you need to double check before presenting anything.
