The answer to this question boils down to just two factors, price and technology.
Plasma TVs were made with the intention of replacing large-screen TVs. You can see that their production and marketing focus also support this aim. With regard to larger screen sizes, the cost of manufacturing LCD TVs is higher than Plasma TVs. Hence, the former are priced much higher in the market.
Affordable (less than $1,500) LCD TVs with screen size of 32 inches are easily available nowadays in the market. But, larger LCD TVs (with screen size of more than 42 inches) are definitely more expensive than Plasma TVs of same screen size, even though the difference in prices is narrowing rapidly.
In the current scenario in the flat panel TV market, Plasma TVs rule the 42-inch and above sizes segment, while LCDs are the favorites in the 40-inch and below sizes segment.
But, it is to be noted that significant developments are occurring with LCDs and they are beginning to approach Plasma in the size range of 42 inches and above. At present, the largest LCD TVs available for commercial use have a screen size of 65 inches, while the sizes of some plasma screens have gone up to more than 70 inches. The biggest Plasma TV available right now is a 103-inch model from the Business Division of Panasonic.
With improvement in technology, increase in efficiency of production, and growth in both supply of and demand for LCDs, there will be a corresponding increase in the availability of LCD TVs with larger screens (42 inches and above) and a decline in the prices of even much larger LCD TVs.
