Everyone in this world must have heard about the recent globally publicized and aggressively promoted launch of the Apple iPhone. The latest gadget attracted unexpected news attention, phenomenal sales and has received several praising commentaries since then. But there are voices of discord coming from the trading community who have purchased the phone. I highlighted one of the major draw backs of iPhone, that it is tied up with AT&T and if you want to use it out of the US, then you’ll need to unlock your iPhones.
Most technofreaks find the slick iPhone’s features highly attractive and swear by it. Apart from being touch-sensitive the screen functions as several gadgets including mobile phone, wide screen video iPod, internet and e-mail abilities, scheduler, diary, camera among others. Though official sales data for the launch-week is yet to be released, it is estimated that over 700,000 units have been sold thus far … phew !! quite an achievement !!
The sales maybe phenomenal but there are dissenting voices and expressions of doubt in the corporate world about the business utility of the iPhone. Despite the spurt of fame, not all evaluations of this composite device by the corporate executives have generated positive feedback. Though the iPhone has undisputed superiority in terms of internet and entertainment when compared with competing models in BlackBerry, Treo etc, it has a big complaint: incompatibility with existing corporate e-mail. The key less keyboard is another great hassle and requires lots of time to learn to do basic word processing tasks such as word processing or editing PDF files. Cut and paste facilities is also absent in e-mail.
The new iPhone presents some major obstacles to business users, it is incompatible with Java and Flash players and those files are not used. Connectivity with the world wide web is not so seamless, with speed high at Wi-Fi hot spots and becoming progressively and painfully slower as one proceeds outside the area.
With the basic model of iPhone costing around $500, businessmen will think twice before investing in this gadget for themselves or their employees. Others who have no idea how to spend the extra money in their wallets, I guess iPhone is a great buy
