Recover Firefox Book Marks - The Easiest Way

Posted in Tech Tips / Tech Tricks / Tech Hacks by Gautam on Jul 21st, 2007

Currently experiencing one of those dreadful moments, power failures coupled with heavy rains. Well it definitely is romance time for all couples ;), but stags like me, just hate it.

It just got worse, a client waiting for updates from my end, while I am busy working on it. I had some quick bookmarks open for reference. Yes, I use Mozilla Fireforx and I love it for reasons kown. Though it’s not the “Perfect” broswer, I can bet that it’s the best one and can beat any other free browsers currently available in the market.

Recently I updated to 2.0.0.5 . and the first thing I noticed is that an old bug has creeped back, which seemed to have been resolved in 2.0.0.4 . The bug is, if the Firefox shuts down unexpectedly, all your bookmarks are lost, yeah literally you won’t find them (unless you know how to get them back :) ). This was fixed in 2.0.0.4, as my Firefox did shut down unexpectedly a couple of times, but when I restarted it, I would find all the bookmarks intact.

Today, for the first time after upgrading to 2.0.0.5, my Firefox shut down unexpectedly (thanks to the power failure), and a UPS in repair, which needs to be worked on by a technician.

After what seemed like eternity, the power finally came back and I turned on the Firefox application only to find all my book marks were gone again. I just could not afford to loose them as there was a lot of information which were on “must read” now list. I had to find a way to get them back.

I just searched for “Recover bookmarks on Firefox” and swoosshh … I got the solution. Well little did I know it was so easy to recover the bookmarks ? :)
Here’s the procedure how to recover your lost bookmarks in Firefox the easiest way. I’m currently using XP, so will explain with respect to XP, for other OS’s have a look here.

**Ensure that Firefox application is not running while doing this. **

1> Click on Start –> Run –> %APPDATA% and click OK
2> Navigate to the folder Mozilla\\Firefox\\Profiles\\xxxxxxxx.default
3> If it’s only you who uses the Firefox and there is only one user on the comp, then you’ll find the default-user folder in Profiles folder, else you’ll find a folder with respective log on username.
4> In here you’ll find “bookmarkbackups” folder. Firefox automatically saves up to 5 latest bookmarks in the “bookmarkbackups” folder. The bookmarks are stored in “bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD-html” format.
5> Go back to Profiles\<username> folder, delete bookmarks.html, get the latest bookmark from “bookmarkbackups“, rename the file as “bookmarks.html
6> Restart Firefox and your bookmarks should be back in order :)

The Cell Phone Ringtones Hub

Posted in » Free Mobile / Cell Phone Ringtones by Gautam on Jul 20th, 2007

The category “Mobile / Cell Phone Ringtones” is up for a while, but I did not have enough time in hand to digg out a site which was worth being mentioned. But everything changed accidentally yesterday.

I was stumbling as usual (I come across a great deal of good sites, mostly all of them when I’m stumbling), and came across MyRingtonesHub, which has a really HUGE collection of cell phone ringtones.

If you ever did live in the U.S of A, or some parts of world, then you pretty well know that it’s a little hard to get ringtones of your choice on prepaid phones (I know it doesn’t work like that in our country luckily :) ). MyRingtonesHub has a good collection of ringtones for prepaid phones as well, well a nice market to cover from the marketing perspective ;) .

Coming to the final bit, I can’t imagine anyone NOT listening to music, but everyone have their own choice of music. When it comes to me, most of you who know me well enough know what I like, but those who don’t know me, you can say that I live on heavy and death/trash metal. And MyRingTonesHub have dedicated a section for me, the “heavy metal ringtones” section :D .

For more than one reason, MyRingtonesHub is my current favorite place ;) .

Quarter Mile - 25 Glorious Virus Years

In the year 1981, Richard Skrenta got an Apple II series microcomputer as his Christmas gift. Skrenta in his 9th grade then was exited beyond bounds as computers were his favorite. He said ““I had always been mechanically curious, taking apart tube radios and telephones and wiring up O gauge Lionel train sets when I was young. When I got an Apple II in the 7th grade, I was in heaven”.

Being a smart kid that he was, he always tried to come up with tricks, ways in which he could fool his friends. “I had been playing jokes on schoolmates by altering copies of pirated games to self-destruct after a number of plays. I’d give out a new game, they’d get hooked, but then the game would stop working with a snickering comment from me on the screen (9th grade humor at work here)”, he once told on Security Focus.

Since the output message was too personal, his friends were smart enough to figure who the almighty was responsible for it and they banned Skrenta from their machines. This forced Skrenta to go a step beyond and put his “small piece” of code on the school’s computer and thus was born Elk Cloner, the worlds first known computer virus. The virus was not meant to hurt the Apple computers but to annoy all his friends who abandoned him.

The virus could attach itself to the Apple DOS 3.3 operating system and then onto floppy disks, from floppy disks to other machines and so on. It was the first spread “in the wild” viruses. The tittering message it would slash across the screen read:

Elk Cloner: The program with a personality

It will get on all your disks
It will infiltrate your chips
Yes it’s Cloner!

It will stick to you like glue
It will modify RAM too
Send in the Cloner!

Cost Effective Cellular Phone Solution In Canada

Posted in Reviews, » Latest Mobile / Cell phone News by Gautam on Jul 18th, 2007

I have friends all over the world. I can stay in touch with them through out the day, for a negligible cost, that’s the beauty of internet.

Recently I was talking to a friend Mike, based in Canada. I was doing a survey on cost effective cellular phone solutions in various parts and Mike happened to help me a lot on concluding great deal of details on the topic.

Here’s the outcome of our talk:

1> Be it personal or business use for those who live in Canada, Atlantic Mobility - Atlantic Canada’s leading cell phone and wireless communications website, is the place to look for the best deals.

2> All of Atlantic Canada’s most popular cellular retailers can be found there.

3> Before you zero in on what you plan to buy, ensure that you do your homework, do a thorough research. Study your necessities perfectly so that you don’t pick a wrong choice.

For example: many consumers only really require
a prepaid cell phone, rather than a monthly (billed) solution. Prepaid phones are easy to set-up and use, just ask your local dealer.

4> Cellular phones are coming way down in price too! In fact, if you look around, you’ll see that many Atlantic Canada Cell Phone Dealers offer
free phones as part of a monthly or yearly package.

5> http://www.AtlanticMobility.com is an attractive and easy to use website.

Drop by today! On the web Atlantic Mobility.

Thanks for your time Mike.

Reliable, Affordable, Effective Conference Calling

Posted in Reviews, Technology Updates by Gautam on Jul 18th, 2007

Previously we did have a small discussion about conference calls and their importance in today’s world. Well, we all know that conference call helps improve productivity and also has a lot of other advantages. Now let us look at the important aspects we need to keep in mind while choosing the conference call service providers.

Firstly, the whole process of setting up should be as simple as possible. You really would not want waste time messing with the setup. The purpose of conference calls is to improve productive and hence making conference calls as simple as possible is the key. If you choose to get service from the major service providers, you’ll be given a number which you have to call and enter a pass code and the same procedure will be followed by your customer and when the pass codes are verified, you can go ahead with your calls for how ever long.

Secondly, reliability is a must. It becomes extremely irritating if the calls get abandoned in the midst of an important meeting or client update. Ensure that the service you are opting for has positive feed back and 100% uptime. Do your homework before selecting your provider. Prepare a short list of service providers’ vs. price, reliability, simplicity on a spread sheet each service provider offers. Do enough research on the internet for relevant information about each service provider. Talk to others who’ve used the service/s and note down the pros and cons about each service provider and then tabulate the results. Reliable Conference Call services are a must.

Technology is advancing leaps and bounds every single day, as a result of which the prices of all technology related services/products are reducing drastically. The world of tele-communications is no exception. Ensure that you get the best value for your money from your conference call service provider. Choose inexpensive yet reliable conference call service providers.

The other day, I was casually having a conversation with O.D, an old friend of mine who is currently based in the UK. We were discussing about the advantages of web conferencing and its importance in our day to day life today. According to him if you need to make conference calls to UK or conference calls in UK then http://www.saveonconferences.co.uk/ is the best option. Later I did a small research on them and found that, apart from quality conference call and conference calling facilities they also provide great web conferencing service as well.

If you have any suggestions or have used some services, which you wish to recommend, let me know, I’ll update this post, of course after the initial inspection, as I don’t want spammers spamming with loads of not so worthy services.

Web/Audio Conferencing, The Cheap And Best Way

Posted in Reviews, Technology Updates by Gautam on Jul 18th, 2007

How serious are you about the business you have in hand? Earlier it was a difficult task to get customers sitting in the other part of the world. Either you or your customer had to fly down to meet up in person to discuss further about a possible deal, when you are not even assured if you’ll get the deal. If you get the deal, then the money spent on traveling is well worth and if things do not work the way you wanted, then such a waste of time, money and energy.

One of the main problems is, either most companies cannot afford to fly down to their customers place because of time/financial situations, or even worse they do not know about the full potential of the web/audio conferencing.

Small business owners looking for cost effective conference calling should have a look at PGi Conference calls. I personally recommend PGi is they offer everything you need in an easy to use, reliable conference call service always available, at your fingertips.

Google Makes A Fool Out Of Themself - Google Video Blog

Posted in Blogging, Marketing by Gautam on Jul 17th, 2007

Promotion is an essential factor when it comes to branding yourself/company/product. Well, it’s a well known fact that putting up a blog comes a long way in promoting your self/company/product. Every other person involved in the marketing industry, either directly or indirectly is associated with blogging and it’s so for obvious reasons.

When it comes to promoting anything, there are two ways, one is the good way known as good promotion and the other, yeah, bad promotions. Well, do I hear you saying, promotions are promotions so what’s the deal with good or bad promotions now?

Let’s face it, good promotions can portray you/your product a “must have” substance in front of your potential customers where are bad promotions can be a major turn off. Bad promotions can turn you into a laughing stock and ensure you look like a joker.

Well by now you are wondering WTF? The title talks about Google Video Blog and am uttering absolutely irrelevant stuff, right? Hold on, mm coming right there.

I was forced to write this post as I came across an interesting post, which speaks what a blunder google had committed, though it’s an age old post, there are some “marketing lessons” to be learnt from it.

If you are blogging for fun, then these kind of mistakes don’t matter much, but when it’s a corporate blog and there are millions of eye balls watching every single word you type, every word you speak, every single thought you express, you need to double check before presenting anything.
